13.26 Golan Conflict, 1972â1973
Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the Six Day War in 1967 (13.18) and retained control after the War of Attrition (13.21). Conflict resumed in 1972. Some Palestinian guerrillas driven out of Jordan in 1970 and 1971 (13.23, 13.25) attacked Israel from Syria. Israel retaliated by air attacks upon Syria in early March 1972. Syrian aircraft simultaneously attacked Israeli territory. Further Israeli air raids occurred in early September and intermittently until early January 1973. In addition, Israeli and Syrian artillery dueled repeatedly along the Golan Heights from November 1972 until January 1973. A half-dozen Syrian soldiers died as did a similar number of Israeli military personnel.
